PCC Communications Technology Building Renovation

Portland, Oregon

Portland Community College is undertaking a full renovation of the Communications Technology (CT) Building at its Sylvania campus to create a modern hub for the college’s Creative Arts programs. Funded through PCC’s 2022 bond program, the project includes a complete interior and architectural modernization, seismic upgrades, new MEP systems, collaboration spaces, accessibility improvements, and exterior site enhancements designed to create more vibrant, welcoming spaces for students, faculty, and staff.

Alliant Systems is serving as the design-build mechanical contractor, providing mechanical expertise from early design through construction. Alliant participated in a year-long design-assist process alongside PCC and the project team, with an extensive focus on site investigation to verify existing conditions and improve the accuracy of design documents. Through weekly coordination meetings and advanced BIM/VDC workflows, Alliant evaluated constructibility, identified potential conflicts, and developed solutions before construction, helping maintain project schedule and minimize field issues.

A key challenge was integrating new mechanical systems while preserving the architectural vision and creating open, student-centered gathering spaces. Alliant developed innovative routing solutions, including concealing ductwork within fire-rated soffits, allowing the project to maintain required ventilation and occupant comfort without compromising the modern aesthetic. This collaborative, design-focused approach is helping transform the CT Building into a flexible, contemporary environment that supports the future of the Sylvania campus.
